I'm always looking to add to my library of "practical self defense" information. Anybody got some good recommendations?

Are you looking for instructional or would you also include entertainment with added value?

I actually prefer "instructional" over "entertaining". Actually I think the instructional videos are quite entertaining! LOL!

I just recently purchased a DVD that I might review here at a later date. It's called "Internal Damage - Advanced Tai Chi for Combat" I haven't received the video yet, but the preview clips on their website, www.internaldamagetaichi.com , look pretty interesting. I let ya know when I get it how it really ranks. :)

      Namaste,

        Okay.

I live in a martial arts rich environment, so I've always just gone to seminars, dojos, etc. to learn new things. (visual and tactile learner here) I just attended a national convention for my art and there were several vendors with instructional DVDs. One in particular by Prof. Bob Hudson should be good. I think he has a website.

Which art do you train in? I am studying a style of jujitsu.

Well, as the name of the tribe suggests, I have my own "personal" eclectic style. It's based on a wide variety of "reality based" martial arts. Bicolano Kuntao and Wu Wei Wing Chun (I have a black belt/sash in both) are at the root of the system. The rest are a wide range of styles: Arnis/Escrima/Kali, Muay Thai, Silat, Jiu Jitsu and WW2 Combatives. I'm currently thinking about writing my first book on how to use everday items as self-defense weapons. What particular style of Jiu Jitsu do you study?

I'm studying Dan Zan Ryu Jujitsu. I'm only about 1/2 through to a black belt and learning "lessons" about just how obstinate my body can be when my mind tells it to do something! The art is a blend of several styles and the main focus is on using uki's energy.

I've heard of some of the arts you mentioned. I've dabbled in a few as well. I think you have the right idea to base your own style on concept rather than stick to rigid kata. After all, very few attackers will bow in and assume a starting stance.

Let me know when your book comes out.
